FOR THE CUMBERLAND TIMES-NEWS
CUMBERLAND — Allegany Law Foundation Inc. recently received two grants to expand the legal services that it provides for seniors in Allegany County.
The nonprofit organization has assisted residents over 60 with civil legal issues such as eviction, debt collection, bankruptcy and fraud since it was founded in 1997. In 2020, Allegany Law began to offer wills, powers of attorney and advance directives at quarterly clinics.
New funding from the Maryland Legal Service Corporation and the Lions Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care Inc. will allow Allegany Law to offer more will, power of attorney and advance directive clinics; deed change clinics; assistance with estate matters; and expanded consumer services. All services are free for seniors who qualify financially.
Allegany Law will now be offering will, power of attorney and advanced directive clinics throughout the community to reach seniors who may have transportation challenges. Community organizations can request an on-site clinic anywhere in Allegany County as long as they can produce a minimum of five eligible clients and have a space where clients can meet privately with an attorney. Quarterly clinics for individuals will continue at Allegany Law’s office on Canal Street, as well.
As a new service, Allegany Law will offer two clinics to provide simple deed changes. Clinic participants will be able to add family members to a property deed, transfer a deed or create a life estate to protect real assets.
